Marcin Gortat and Robin Lopez are weird enemies

Last season's post-Amar'e Suns had some glaring holes inside. Robin Lopez was tabbed to take on a bigger role after impressing during the Suns' 2010 playoff run, but he struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness. The team also obtained Marcin Gortat in December, but he's a merely serviceable player with a much-too-big contract earned in the wake of looking solid as Dwight Howard's backup when the Magic made the NBA Finals in 2009.

Despite their troubles, Lopez and Gortat are still in direct competition with each other for playing time. According to Gortat, they may not be the best of friends. At a camp in Poland, he explained what happened when they first met. Seth Pollack had the story translated into English for SB Nation Arizona (via PBT):

Marcin said that on his first day in Phoenix he asked Robin if practice started on the court or with a video session. Robin told Marcin that he didn't know so Gortat went to the gym while Lopez went to watch video. According to Gortat, a coach came to get him and asked why he was late and Marcin said that he had asked Robin and was told he didn't know where practice was starting. The coach said everyone knew where they were supposed to be. Marcin took that as a sign of where things stood between himself and Lopez.

Gortat went on to talk about the opportunity that Lopez had to earn and keep the starting job.

"This guy (Lopez) had such a big chance, such a big opportunity, to play in the best league. When I was Orlando, playing behind Dwight (Howard), I was praying to get a chance to play and he (Lopez) has had this chance for two years and he didn't take.

So I thought, when you don't want it, there will be 50 persons behind you, waiting to take this chance, and then I came by and I took (it). Sorry, that's business, that's life."

Gortat's claim that Lopez willfully deceived him is the most controversial, so let's start with that one. Pollack notes that Lopez later emailed him to say that the team does not know if practice will start with basketball work or video on any particular day, so it's likely that he was mistaken on this particular day. I have firsthand experience with Lopez and am inclined to believe him. He has quite a bit of talent, but he's also quite scatterbrained and needs to be told exactly what to do on a particular day. If he had really been trying to trick Gortat, he would have told him the wrong place to go, not gone back to his business of playing pogs with Alvin Gentry's young son.

Plus, even if Lopez had been trying to embarrass Gortat on his first day, he wasn't right to air their apparently one-sided feud in public. Lopez has been the subject of trade rumors recently, but he's still a member of the Suns. Gortat just called out a teammate's drive in public. What happens if neither player is dealt? What's that locker room going to be like?

Lopez has his problems as a player, and it was certainly disconcerting for Suns fans that he didn't take more of a leap in 2010-11. But that doesn't mean he has it out for his positional competition or doesn't care about being a good basketball player. Airing this out in public wasn't the answer. More than anything, Gortat comes across as paranoid and insecure.

Enes Kanter wants to play basketball, considers China

All draft picks need to prove themselves in the NBA, but most enter the league having proven something to the general public. College stars have spent a great deal of time on our TV screens, other college players have at least spent some time as prospects, and most of the best foreign players face good competition at the club and international levels.

New Utah Jazz big man Enes Kanter is an outlier. A 19-year-old from Turkey, Kanter was set to play for John Calipari at Kentucky, only to be declared ineligible by the NCAA. So he hasn't played organized basketball for an entire year, and before that he was facing subpar competition for a prep school in Southern California. Kanter has lots of talent, but most scouts and GMs had barely seen him play in a competitive environment before he vaulted to the top of their draft boards.

As such, Kanter needs to play basketball somewhere next season, lockout or no lockout. According to his agent, he's considering China. From Brian T. Smith for the Salt Lake Tribune (via PBT):

Kanter's agent, Max Ergul, told The Salt Lake Tribune on Friday that his client has official offers from two Chinese teams. Ergul does not want Kanter to miss another year of basketball, and he will seriously weigh the offers if the lockout stretches into late September.

"It's very interesting stuff," said Ergul, who said he could not reveal the names of the clubs because details of the negotiations are still confidential. "We'll be entertaining those ideas as well as the lockout progresses. He's a ballplayer ? he has to play." [...]

If the lockout does not end by late September and Kanter decides not to play pro ball overseas, he plans to work out with trainer Tim Grover, who also has ties with Chinese teams.

Kanter's interest in playing overseas isn't notable in itself -- virtually every NBA player of any substance has entertained offers at this point in the summer. Still, his situation is quite different from that of someone like Kobe Bryant. Whereas established players are going overseas to earn some extra money and engage in a diversion during a lockout, Kanter would head to China to prove something and improve his game. He has a legitimate professional interest in the CBA beyond increasing his marketing profile or keeping his bank account afloat.

The CBA isn't the best league around, but it seems amenable to getting NBA imports for a year if it boosts its bottom line. Plus, even at 19, Kanter has experienced enough change that he could move to a new country and probably acquit himself fairly well. He could in fact learn something from a trip to China. If it happens, he may gain more from the lockout than players looking at a club team as a cool way to spend a few months.

Peyton Manning signs new contract with Colts, team owner tweets the terms

You knew that the Indianapols Colts were going to re-sign Peyton Manning to a new contract ? the cap figure if they franchised him would have been so prohibitive (over $20 million in the 2011 league year, which would have Manning taking up more than one-sixth of the Colts' total salary cap space), any other option short of letting him test the open market would have been preferable.

Fortunately for the hearts of Colts fans everywhere, the team was able to come to terms with perhaps the most important player in Colts history -- if we're not talking about Johnny Unitas. Manning signed a five-year, $90 million contract on Saturday that will pay him $69 million in the first three years.

"Signing Peyton was a top priority for this organization and we are thrilled that the deal is complete," Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement released by the team Saturday. "We feel that it is a salary cap friendly deal and it allows us more flexibility."

Irsay then tweeted all the details of the deal, bringing an entirely new level of breaking news to social media (a few edits are ours):

OFFICIAL----WE HAVE A DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a credit 2 Peyton; he put Colt fans, teammates, Ind. n winning ahead of all else. It's 69 over 1rst 3 (23 a yr.1rst 3) 9 0 over 5, cap friendly

We got good cap relief this year from 23 mil. WITH Franchise Tag-- to 16mil. With new deal- and no Peter King, No plans 2 redo..I'm done

think of cash vs. cap this way-any guaranteed money is spread out over entire contract-3 yr.deal,3 mil. Bonus counts 1mil.a yr.

Irsay then referenced the current budget struggles going on in the nation's capitol:

They'll get it done in DC, deadlines r often tip-toed but failure isn't an option - Plenty of camera time, though.

Sounds like the lockout that just ended. In any case, this deal gives the 35-year-old Manning the security of knowing that he'll retire from the game with the only team he's ever played for, in an offense he runs to a ridiculously high standard. And he hasn't lost a bit of his ability ? last season, with injured receivers all around him, Manning attempted and completed the most passes of his 13-year career.

It's a win for all involved ? Manning, Irsay, the Colts, and the twitterati who love the dialogue.

If McNabb wants No. 5, he?ll be promoting a punter?s rock band

Donovan McNabb, as you know, will be playing quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in 2011. Also, as you probably know, McNabb has been wearing the number five his whole career.

What you might not know, unless you really love punting, is that Vikings punter Chris Kluwe already wears number five for the Minnesota Vikings.

Is there a deal to be worked out that would get McNabb the No. 5? There is! As it happens, Chris Kluwe is a prolific tweeter, and posted this upon the news of McNabb heading north.

If McNabb wants No. 5, he?ll be promoting a punter?s rock band

Tripping Icarus is a progressive rock band in Minneapolis. Their bassist is Chris Kluwe.

You can visit their Facebook page here, and listen to some of their songs here. Rolling Stone said "they are to the Minneapolis rock scene what MouseRat is to Pawnee." OK, they didn't say that. I said that.

I admire Kluwe's creativity here. Punters generally don't get a lot of microphones shoved in their faces. If he wanted to be the subject of his own press conference, Chris Kluwe would have to, I don't know, take the snap and literally eat a leather football right there on the field of play. McNabb mentions that he has athlete's foot, and there are reporters camped outside his bathroom window.

I'm ready to name Chris Kluwe the second-best punting number-seller in NFL history. Jeff Feagles remains at the top of that list, having gotten Eli Manning to pay for a family vacation to Florida in exchange for the No. 10. He then later sold another number to Plaxico Burress for ... well, Plaxico may have shafted him on that deal.

In the NFL, there is a phenomenon known as the "touchdown dance" which is ritually performed after scoring a touchdown.

While not every hockey goal is celebrated like football touchdowns are, there are some intriguing and entertaining goal celebrations in hockey.

Most players do the general fist pump, celebrate with teammates and/or jump into glass after scoring. Some players routinely have their own personal goal celebration, akin to a touchdown dance, and others' are more spontaneous.

Here are the 50 best goal celebrations in hockey history.

Kevin Kolb is an Arizona Cardinal, and a well-paid one at thatAfter a couple days of waiting, former Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb is finally an Arizona Cardinal.

The deal worked out really well for the Eagles, who get not only cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie out of the deal, but also squeezed a second-round draft pick out of the Cardinals.

And it works out really well for Kolb, who gets a five-year deal worth $63 million, with $20 million guaranteed, despite having started just seven games in his career, and not all of them particularly well.

It's a risk for the Cardinals to give up a quality young corner and a second-round draft pick, but it's one they had to take.

If things turn out well, and Kolb turns out to be the quarterback they think he is, he's worth the price they paid and more. In the sad-sack NFC West, one player can mean the difference between last place and first place, especially if that player turns out to be a halfway-decent quarterback, and last year, you were only two games out of first place with the Derek Anderson/Max Hall/John Skelton trio under center.

If things don't turn out well, and Kolb is an average-to-below average quarterback, well, he's still probably going to be better than Anderson/Hall/Skelton were last year. In a worst-case scenario, the Cardinals quarterback situation goes from "My goodness, is that really an NFL team?" to "below average" and that might be enough to get them to 7-9, which won the division last year.

Again, they took a risk. They sort of had to. Something had to be done at the quarterback position, they identified the guy they wanted, and went after him. The price was high, but at least this way, no one can fault the Cardinals for not trying.

As sacrilegious as this might sound, the concept of having too much of a good thing holds true even when it comes to the greatest rivalry in North American professional sports.

Admit it, Red Sox Nation. Four years ago, you were hardly conflicted over the ALDS matchup between the Yankees and Indians. You were weary of rivalry drama and simply didn’t want to risk losing a playoff round to a New York team featuring two of Boston’s one-time World Series heroes.

But time has passed and times have changed back to normalcy. Right about now, as the Sox and Pinstripes engage one another this weekend tied for what is practically a runaway best record in the American League and two months left until the postseason, a renewed appetite for another ALCS bout must be taking over both fanbases.

For so many reasons, the timing feels right to replenish the rivalry at the stage that defines rivalries.

For starters, consider the wave of new blood in both clubhouses. Seven individual participants from the 2003 and/or 2004 ALCS have since switched to the other side of the rivalry and subsequently departed the rivalry altogether: David Wells, John Olerud, Alan Embree, Mark Bellhorn, Mike Myers, Johnny Damon and Doug Mientkiewicz.

Boston’s only holdovers from 2004 are manager Terry Francona, David Ortiz, Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield. New York’s only constants are Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez.

And generally speaking, each of those players has a fairly less influential role on their team now than they did seven years ago.

Along with the new wave of personnel is a refreshed sense of purpose, particularly on Boston’s front.

When the Yankees abolished the Twins to claim their passport to the 2004 ALCS, they soon began a five-year drought of playoff series wins, losing to the Sox in historic fashion and then losing three straight Division Series before missing the dance in 2008. Meanwhile, Boston won seven playoff rounds while losing only two and claimed a pair of Commissioner’s Trophies.

But since then, the tables have coincidentally turned on both franchises. The Red Sox are now working on three years without advancing beyond the ALDS. Since losing the 2008 pennant, they have been swept by the Angels in 2009 and missed the playoffs in 2010.

Conversely, since Jonathan Papelbon’s infamous self-destruction in Game 3 of the 2009 ALDS, the Yankees have expelled their demons, winning four straight playoff rounds en route to the 2009 championship and a return trip to the ALCS last autumn.

Odds are the Red Sox and their fans would love nothing more than to flip the fortunes of each team back once again and to do so directly and simultaneously.

Furthermore, what better way to finish the centennial season of baseball at Fenway Park than to have the last American League game of the season come in the form of a victorious endeavor against New York?

By the same token, Yankee fans would surely delight in seeing their team inflict a sour ending to Fenway’s special anniversary, much the same way the Bruins enjoyed dropping a quick curtain on the Montreal Canadiens centennial year in 2009.

And either way, the contesting New England and New York fanbases could take a Sox-Yanks ALCS as their multi-sport rubber match for the year.

The calendar year for these two titanic markets began with the Jets stunning the Patriots in the AFC’s divisional round. Three months later, in a rather less surprising upshot, the Celtics virtually squared the score by sweeping the Knicks out of the NBA playoffs.

And now, the two cities’ American League baseball franchises are likewise knotted in the push for the division title, the top mark in the circuit and, in turn, home-field advantage in the event that they cross paths in mid-October.

Can you crave that? How can you not?

Kurt Warner on Kevin Kolb: ?The verdict is still out on this guy?

Well, to heck with my scouting report on new Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb. Thanks to our friends at the NFL Network, we now have Kurt Warner's thoughts on the Kolb deal. Of course, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better authority on the subject of what it takes to come into a Cardinals team with some question marks and help turn it around. After a great time with the St. Louis Rams and a less-successful turn as Eli Manning's babysitter in New York, Warner joined the Cards in 2005 as a bit of an afterthought and absolutely blew up the NFL over the next five seasons. He led Arizona to a near-Super Bowl win at the end of the 2008 season and retired after the 2009 campaign as a sure Hall of Famer.

On Thursday, Warner talked about Kolb, and the $63 million deal Arizona struck to get him from the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cards also gave up a second-round pick and cornerback Dominique Rogers-Cromartie in the deal ? it's a lot of currency for an unproven quarterback. What does the man with the franchise's best quarterback legacy think?

"My first impression is that I knew it was something that they were interested in for a long time," Warner said. "They were interested in obviously getting a veteran quarterback, a quarterback that they could build around. Kevin Kolb was number one on their list for a long time. Right now you look at the deal and you think they gave up a lot ? but I think the first thought is they had to make a move like this. After where the organization was a couple of years ago, when I retired, having the struggles at that position last year and how they fell off, they had to go out and make a splash and get a quarterback."

True enough ? the Cardinals failed to build in a contingency plan for Warner's retirement (though they knew it was coming, and he had been flirting with other teams before the 2009 season based on contract issues), and their 2010 season was a disaster as a result. With the three-headed QB monster of Derek Anderson, Max Hall and John Skelton, Arizona limped to a 5-11 record and suffered a point differential of minus-145.

However, the question remains ? were the Cards destined to overpay for Kolb, based on that negative experience? Can Kevin Kolb really be that good?

"I don't think we know that yet because we've seen Kevin Kolb play really well, we've seen him make a lot of plays, we've seen him have some big games," Warner said. "And then in some of the other games he's started, we've seen him struggle a little bit. So to go out and give that much up and to pay that much money, I just think the verdict is still out on this guy. That's why it makes it a risky move, but at the same time the Cardinals had to make this kind of move. They had to go out and get a quarterback and say, 'At least we are trying to fill that position because that's a position of need for us.' And we know that in this day and age, you have to have a quarterback if you're going to win."

And in a league that is more and more about the passing game, you'll hear it far more often from executives, coaches and analysts ? if you believe in that one particular quarterback, you'd best do what's needed to get him. In Arizona's case, there's another concern ? superstar receiver Larry Fitzgerald is in the last year of his current contract, and he obviously wants to see some kind of commitment to a long-term solution at the position before re-signing with the team.

"I think that's a big part of it. Fitz is the centerpiece to everything that they do there. Letting certain guys go the last couple years, the one guy that they keep around, the one guy that they want to be in the middle of everything is Larry Fitzgerald. Knowing the frustration that he had last year with all of the different quarterbacks, knowing that they want to get back to getting him the ball, getting him the ball down the field, there is no question that this was a part of that plan. [They said], 'We've got to get a guy that Larry feels comfortable with, that can get him the ball in the positions where he can have the most success and ultimately can let us have success.' So, there is no question that part of this move was not just making the team better, but it was getting someone there that can allow Larry Fitzgerald to be Larry Fitzgerald again."

And that's the multimillion-dollar question. Expecting Kolb to match Warner's greatness is a bit much (especially at this point in time), but something had to be done to put Arizona's offense back on the map. Agree or disagree, that's what this deal was all about.

Commissioner, League Brass Must Stop “Poking” Their Head in ARod’s Business:

By: Gary M. Ayd

I am not here to be Alex Rodriguez's publicist.  Nor am I going to claim in this space that he is a stand-up or likeable guy because he is not.

That said, he also is not Albert Haynesworth, stomping on people’s heads, Ugueth Urbina going Freddie Krueger on some farmers, or even Barry Bonds fighting his teammates in the dugout and ignoring them after the game.

ARod, a millionaire many times over, plays poker.

The same game that you (and I) play with our buddies over a few cold ones while watching the football game and eating greasy pizza and hot wings.  The major differences between the game you and I play in and ARod’s game, besides MLB’s paranoia of course, is money and celebrity.

I understand that baseball is afraid of ARod becoming Pete Rose II, and I follow the train of thought that says: well if he enjoys this form of gambling he may progress to betting on games.

That said, it is not illegal to play cards with your buddies. In ARod’s case, the fact that he lost several thousand dollars according to reports is not even irresponsible, as we all know ARod has plenty of paper.

Suggestion for you Commish—why don’t you figure out how to make your game, sport and league more appealing to people other than media types, hardcore ballplayers and old people before getting on your high horse to disparage ARod for engaging in a perfectly acceptable and perfectly legal activity?

Bottom line: there is nothing illegal about poker in the greater context of American law (unless of course it's online...arrh this angers me), so there is no way you can convince me that it needs to be illegal in your sport, or any other sport for that matter.

As long as the players are not betting on their teams to LOSE in games they are directly involved in, who cares if they bet on their own sport or even their own team? It does not jeopardize the integrity of the game in any way.

The players would not have any reason to try and lose if they bet on their team to win; in fact they would try harder to make sure they won so they could get paid!

Poker is a game. ARod, the public and yours truly enjoy playing it. We do not enjoy some old man who is out of touch with reality poking around our affairs.

Bud: quit poking your head where it does not belong.

Sincerely,

Progressive and clear-thinking citizens everywhere.

Fox Sports reports that Tiki Barber may be taking his slightly washed up talents to South Beach. (Sorry to reuse that way overused saying. I couldn't resist.)

Barber worked out for the Dolphins on Tuesday and may be joining his brother Ronde in the Sunshine State.

While the Dolphins have not totally committed to the 36-year-old back, the move makes a lot of sense.

Ricky Williams, while having not yet signed anywhere, has at one time or another expressed his desire to leave Miami. Ronnie Brown went off and signed with the Miami Hea—excuse me—the Philadelphia Eagles and their crew of overrated players brought in to create hype that will eventually fizzle.

Probably about six weeks into the year, when the Eagles are 2-4.

Anyway, back to my original point: Barber is 36 and according to sources looked good in the workout.

The Dolphins have brought back old flame Jason Taylor and are reportedly talking to Brett Favre. (Ugh, please kill me now.) So, what's another likely washed-up veteran with ego and personality issues?

But Tiki Barber will be more than just an unnecessary locker room presence if he is brought to Miami.

His far-too-welcomed exit from New York and lack of ability to be a broadcaster will hopefully light a fire under Barber and inspire him to play ball the way Tiki thinks he can, which is probably better than he should physically be able to.

With the addition of Reggie Bush and the drafting of workhorse Daniel Thomas, the Dolphins closed the book on the Ronnie-and-Ricky experiment and ushered in a new era of Miami running backs.

Thomas can run. It's that simple. He will put his head down, lower his shoulder, and pile drive defenses.

Bush (the latest and greatest ex-Saint who won a Heisman to venture to Miami) has some of the best hands out of the backfield in the league.

While Bush isn't going to get a ton of touches running the ball and I cringe at the thought of him running the Wildcat, he can be a nice target for Chad Henne and his publicly know check-down fetish.

Bringing in Barber will give the Dolphins three very capable running backs.

Bush will be designated to run screen passes and little out routes. Thomas will be the main guy and get most of the carries and touches, and he will be a very effective halfback for years to come.

And, in case of ineffectiveness by Thomas, Barber will fit perfectly into the second "running"-back role. He will not break off huge runs or even likely get more than 10 touches in a game, but he has decent hands would be a nice 3rd-and-short back if Lousaka Polite does not return with the same vigor he had in 2009.

Barber is coming off of a four-year hiatus from the game in which he attempted and failed—miserably I might add—at having a broadcasting career. But he still has an intense love for the game of football, and that is why he is trying his hand at a comeback.

Even if the Barber experiment doesn't work, he will take some of the load off of the young Thomas and will provide veteran leadership.

Barber does have 10,488 career rushing yards, so it's not like the talent isn't there.

And if worst comes to worst, he and Ronde can retire to the house that they will purchase together upon Tiki's arrival in Florida.

Steelers coach sells Mercedes to team cafeteria worker for $20A cook at the Pittsburgh Steelers team complex is driving around in a red Mercedes convertible thanks to an unexpected and generous deal from the franchise's former secondary coach.

On his final day in Pittsburgh before taking over as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, Ray Horton gave his 1999 Mercedes SL500 to cafeteria worker Maurice Matthews.

The cook had always kidded around with Horton, telling him he was coaching his position and asking when he'd be allowed to drive his sports car. Horton would jokingly reply, "you can't afford the gas in it."

But on his final day in Pittsburgh, Horton approached Matthews to say goodbye and asked if he could borrow whatever money he had in his pocket. When Matthews handed over a twenty, Horton said "sold for $20!" and handed him the keys to his car.

"Ray said, 'Hey, you always liked the car, you're a good dude, I know you'll take care of it," Matthews told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's yours."

The next day he drove Horton to the airport and received all the paperwork to take ownership of the car. With 64,000 miles on it, Matthews ended up paying $20 for a vehicle that carries a Kelly Blue Book value of $17,735.

"It's just taking care of guys who took care of you," Horton told the Arizona Cardinals team blog.

The Cardinals got a good man. And cafeteria workers in Tempe just found their new favorite customer.

Photo: Were Indians looking for an outfielder or a quarterback?

After reading the reaction to Thursday's trade, I'm convinced there are some Cleveland Indians fans who would have rather added former Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme to the outfield at Progressive Field than Chicago Cubs castoff Kosuke Fukudome.

But thanks to the presumable wonders of a television production template, a local channel somehow combined the two dream dashers under "Kosuke Delhomme" in an on-screen graphic. I'm not sure what the VORP of this "If They Mated" creation would be, but I do know that it would immediately own the best nickname in baseball ? the Asian Cajun!

August is an interesting month to be a hockey fan. On one hand, we know that September will bring us the start of on-ice team activities and preseason games.

On the other hand, we have to make it through the roughest patch of the year. The stretch where hockey is within sight, but still just out of reach.

In an effort to help those of you in the world that are desperate for some ice action, it seemed like a good idea to share some laughs from the game that we love.

The slides that follow are 35 of the most embarrassing moments in NHL history. Criteria for selection was pretty simple, it had to be a funny that is either disgracefully embarrassing to the game or just plain funny.

I tried to stay away from being too heavy-handed with things like riots or deliberate attempts to injure, because you the reader is probably not looking for a Debbie Downer article. You want some laughs!

With that being said, I present you the 35 most embarrassing NHL related moments. If you have a good one that I missed, let me know in the comments so that everyone can check it out.

With five key members of their 2010 team becoming unrestricted free agents, and barely any money to work with—ESPN's John Clayton estimated that the Giants were $11.3 million over the salary cap at the start of free agency. The New York Giants faced a tough decision heading into the 2011 offseason. Of its five (key) impending free agents—Ahmad Bradshaw, Barry Cofield, Kevin Boss, Steve Smith and Mathias Kiwanuka—which player(s) should New York attempt to re-sign?

The answer seemed obvious to me.

Both Cofield and Kiwanuka, although talented, were expendable because of the depth the Giants have along the defensive line. Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul, Chris Canty, Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin are the reason for this depth. The players in this order are Bradshaw, Boss and Smith as the players, who I believed, the Giants most needed to re-sign.

Jerry Reese, who has a slightly better idea of how to run a football team, decided to go in somewhat of a different direction.

In addition to re-signing Bradshaw, Reese also worked out a two-year deal with Kiwanuka, bringing the former Boston College defensive end back for his sixth season in New York.

However, despite putting offers on the table for both Boss and Smith—two of Eli Manning's most reliable weapons—the Giants general manager has been unable to agree on a deal with either of them.

Negotiating a contract with Smith isn't as urgent because the four-year wideout will most likely start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. However, with Boss drawing attention around the league mainly from Oakland, the Giants must take action quickly or else they might be without their top tight end heading into 2011.

According to a report by ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk, Boss worked out for the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday.

The Raiders, who are desperately trying to find Zach Miller's replacement at tight end, were impressed by Boss' workout according to Ralph Vacchiano of the blog The Big Blue Screen.

Although the Raiders are over the salary cap by $12 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, if they are that interested in Boss, the Raiders can make enough adjustments to their team salary by either releasing players or restructuring contracts—so that they can afford him.

If the Raiders do indeed sign Boss, then the Giants are in a world of trouble.

Sure, one can argue that Boss' numbers don't look great on paper (35 receptions, 531 yards receiving and six touchdowns in 13 games in '10). It is the little things Boss does, such as holding a block on the edge just long enough to spring Bradshaw or Brandon Jacobs.  What makes him a great player is catching a key third-down pass to keep the chains moving or making a tough grab over the middle with the game on the line.

Since he entered the league in 2007, Boss has provided Eli Manning with a safety blanket, someone who Manning could trust to find open on third-down and red zone situations.

At 6'6", Boss provides Manning with a big target, who has the size and strength to create separation between him and his defender.

In addition to receiving ability, Boss is a much-improved run blocker. In 2009, Boss finished with a grade of plus 10.2 in run blocking, according to Pro Football Focus

So, while he may not be among the game's elite tight ends, Boss is one of the more complete tight ends in the NFL. Which is something you can't say about either Ben Patrick or Bear Pascoe, whom as of now would be Boss' replacements.

I know, I'm as afraid as you are.

Don't get me wrong; I think Patrick and Pascoe are quality No. 2 tight ends, but that's about it.

Neither Patrick nor Pascoe have the receiving ability to be a team's No. 1 tight end, and in this day in age, it's extremely important to have a tight end that can stretch the field and make plays with his hands.

With that said, outside of re-signing Kevin Boss, the Giants don't have a lot of options—in terms of acquiring a No. 1 tight end—before the start of the season.

This year's free-agent crop is considered weak at tight end, and with top tight ends, such as; Owen Daniels, Zach Miller and Marcedes Lewis all off the board, there is no one left who is capable of being a team's No. 1 tight end.

Yeah, the Giants could always trade for Seattle's John Carlson. But that would likely involve surrendering a draft pick for a tight end that isn't even as talented as Boss.

While one can argue that Carlson is just as good of a receiver as Boss, it's clear that Boss is the much better blocker.

In 2010, Boss finished with a pass blocking efficiency (PBE) of 2.64—the seventh best among TE's— (allowing just five quarterback pressures in 142 pass blocking snaps), while Carlson posted a PBE of 6.76 (allowing 11 pressures in 122 pass blocking snaps), according to Pro Football Focus

And with the reconstruction of their offensive line, the Giants need someone who can help to protect the quarterback—especially on the left edge.

Here's the bottom line, the Giants need Boss. No questions asked.

As a result, Reese needs to bump up the offer just a little bit. The offer doesn't have to be anything ridiculous, it just has to be similar to what Oakland is offering, because unless the Raiders offer Boss significantly more money than the Giants do, Boss will come back to New York because he told the New York Daily News that returning to New York was his No. 1 priority.

The human side of free agency: Sometimes, it?s all about the kidsEspecially in this year's rapid-fire transaction schedule, it's all too easy to treat the names as numbers and forget that when players are moving from city to city ? sometimes against their preferences ? there's a family continuity that's broken. Now, we're not expecting anyone to "feel sorry" for guys earning millions of dollars, especially in this economy, but there are sides to these trades and free agency signings that don't always see the light of day.

Take the Seattle Seahawks' decision to move on from former franchise quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Acquired in trade form the Green Bay Packers before the 2001 season, Hasselbeck took the tutelage of Mike Holmgren and Trent Dilfer seriously enough to make himself into a playoff quarterback in 2003, and a Super Bowl quarterback a few years later. Age, injuries, and bad front office decision-making limited Hasselbeck's ability to keep that standard up over the last few seasons, but he had become the face of the franchise and the unquestioned leader of the team. His last act as the team's quarterback was to lead the lockout-forced player workouts at the University of Washington despite the fact that he wasn't under contract at the time.

Hasselbeck also connected with the community ? so much, in fact, that when Seahawks general manager John Schneider's young son discovered that he and head coach Pete Carroll had decided to let Hasselbeck take a better offer from the Tennessee Titans, the move was not met with a positive reaction. At all.

"My little guy was crying the other day because he's got a Matt Hasselbeck jersey," Schneider told the media Friday night. "He ran in the room and punched me [when he heard the news] and ran out of the room crying, so I get it, I get it."

And Schneider thought facing the media was tough.

From Hasselbeck's point of view, his new three-year, $21 million contract with the Titans didn't mean much to his daughters, who are now dealing with their own side of the change of scenery.

"You don't realize everything that goes into it," Hasselbeck told KING5 TV's Paul Silvi. "Call the school back in Seattle, tell them we're not coming back. The girls are upset that they're not going to be on their soccer team that they like to play with in Seattle, and all that kind of stuff. There's some transition ? it wasn't our first choice, but it will be okay ? it will be a learning experience for the kids."

Well, at least Hasselbeck's kids didn't punch him, which puts him one-up on his former GM.

Everyone in Oakland knows of the huge void on the offensive side of the ball. However, it’s not at quarterback, as for the first time in years, the Raiders head into the season with a clear-cut starter in Jason Campbell. And while Oakland’s wideouts are not scaring any defenses per se, the receiving corps boasts some precocious young talent that has rounded into form over the past couple of seasons.

Instead, the vacancy on offense has been created by the recent departure of tight end Zach Miller, who signed a five-year, $34 million contract as free agent with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday. Losing Miller was somewhat of a surprise; the Raiders had been working to get under the salary cap in the anticipation of retaining the Pro Bowler.

Miller’s exit, though, did not receive the hoopla or attention that the other former Raider free agent did. In losing both Miller and Nnamdi Asomugha, the Raiders lost their most consistent performers on each side of the ball. Unfortunately, Miller’s production on offense will be more sorely missed than Asomugha’s impact on defense.

With all of the turmoil at the quarterback position over the past several seasons, compounded by the lack of consistency and depth from the wideouts, Miller proved to be Oakland’s most steady and reliable receiver. Since his selection in the 2007 draft, Miller has posted team-high totals, catching 226 passes for 2,712 yards and 12 TDs over the past four seasons. His consistency and his overall improvement culminated in his first Pro Bowl selection after last season.

And it is that constancy that will be missed on the Oakland offense. Through all of the rancid quarterback play from JaMarcus Russell, Miller kept catching balls. Throughout the running game being hampered by various injuries to Darren McFadden and Michael Bush and Justin Fargas, Miller kept blocking. And with the lowly production from receivers Jerry Porter, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Javon Walker and Darrius Heyward-Bey, Miller was wide open.

Yes, through all the changes on offense, Miller remained the most consistent weapon, acting as a security blanket during Campbell’s acclimation to the Raiders system. And though Miller kept the Raiders warm during cold offensive spurts, Oakland did not make it a high enough priority to re-sign their Pro Bowl tight end. Recent signings point to the Raiders focusing on defensive upgrades rather than making additions to the offense.

But now they need to start adding.

With new head coach Hue Jackson taking the helm and controlling the offense, the Raiders need to replace the steadiness of Miller in both the passing and running games. Unfortunately for the Silver and Black, they do not possess a lot of depth at tight end.

The tight ends currently on the roster are led by third-year special teams veteran Brandon Myers, who has a mere 16 catches for his career. Next on the depth chart are rookies David Ausberry and Richard Gordon. Needless to say, there is some room to improve at this position. Rather, Oakland needs to say they should improve this position.

There has been some speculation about whether the Raiders would pursue Kevin Boss, the current free agent recently of the New York Giants. Boss, like Miller, was selected in the 2007 draft, and has been a stalwart member of the multi-faceted Giants offense. His potential led to the dismissal of incumbent Pro Bowler Jeremy Shockey, and Boss started the 2008 and ’09 campaigns as the No. 1 tight end. Last season, however, Boss regressed a bit, playing in only nine games due to injury. Still, for his career, he has put up solid numbers with 105 receptions, 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The tight end has expressed interest in having a new boss, so it would be a great fit for him to come to a budding team like the Raiders. Should Boss opt not to be bossed around by Al Davis and Co., the Raiders need to find another suitable candidate to fill Miller’s shoes. With the lack of experienced tight ends, Oakland should find a replacement for their lost offensive weapon.

Saints, Dolphins agree to terms on Reggie Bush trade

It's been a long day for transactions, but things are going late into the evening in the craziest week we can remember ? and according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins have agreed to the terms of a major trade ? the Saints have agreed to send running back Reggie Bush to the Dolphins.

Glazer reports that Joel Segal, Bush's agent, was negotiating into the night with both teams, and engineered an agreement contingent on Bush agreeing to sign a new contract with Miami instead of staying with the Saints at a reduced rate. On Thursday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Reggie Bush agreed to a two-year deal with the Dolphins, which makes the trade a done deal.

Bush will help the Dolphins with its need for a running game in what is most likely their post-Ronnie Brown/Ricky Williams era. There would still be a need for a bigger back, which could put the Dolphins in line to take a look at Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber, who will be released this week. Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland and head coach Tony Sparano are very familiar with Barber from their time with the Bill Parcells-era Cowboys from 2003 through 2006; Barber was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 draft.

As for Bush, his career has been a checkered one. His stats have been unimpressive on their face for such a high draft pick (second overall in the 2006 draft) ? just 2,090 yards rushing on 524 carries and 294 catches for 2,142 yards.

However, Bush does provide great schematic value in ways that don't show up on stat sheets ? he forces defenses to adjust with his speed and versatility, and the Dolphins are looking to break out of the doldrums on offense. Bush might also be playing with quarterback Kyle Orton, whom the Dolphins are talking about acquiring in a trade with the Denver Broncos.
